Christmas is a time for family, giving and receiving, and following traditions from years gone by such as putting up and decorating a Christmas tree, looking at Christmas lights and hanging stockings on the fireplace. It occurs during the last 2 weeks of the year when people meet up with loved ones that they haven’t seen for a while and reminisce about the year gone by.
25th December was chosen as Christmas Day for Christians as this was the day of the birth of Jesus Christ. Soon after his birth, three wise men, Gaspar, Balthasar, and Melchior, presented gifts to him and his family. The word ‘Christmas’ comes from the Mass of Christ/Jesus.
The 1st recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336AD, during the time of the 1st Christian Roman Emperor.Years later, Pope Julius I declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on the day of 25th December.
The christmas tree has been used to celebrate winter festivals for thousands of years. People used tree branches to decorate their homes during this time, as it made them think of the spring to come. As years went by, many traditions have occurred including people hanging Christmas Trees upside down from the ceiling using chains!
